Where is there room for more parking spaces

I've received a couple of letters suggesting that there a few places with single yellow lines that don't seem to have a good reason not to be parking spaces. Shoot me an email or drop a comment on the blog if you've noticed anywhere like that.

This may be controversial however desperate times call for desperate measures. I think the Council should be looking at reducing the number of Pay and Display places and reducing the City Car Club parking space sizes to increase the Zone 8 Spaces.

Moreover, and I told you I was feeling controversial, I for one will be opposing any more Multiple Occupancy applications in the Warrender Park Road area. Clearly there are too many residents for the available parking spaces and reducing the number of multiple occupancy (rented) properties is a more viable solution than not allowing tenants to buy permits and restricting permits to owner-occupiers and there family.

I am grateful that someone has taken the initiative to voice our concerns about this apalling parking problem. As if it were not enough that we have to put up with frequent car vandalism in this area we are now expected to pay for permits that give you no chance to park anywhere.
The parking problem has resulted only since the introduction of the S1 zone which prevented many from the Warrender Park Road area from parking for free in those previously unzoned streets in Marchmont. Zone 8 covers a relatively small area but with high density of occupancy whereas zone S1 is relatively large and only ab. 70% of parking spaces there are occupied during the day. In fact, if you check Lauderdale Street, one side of it (along J. Gillespies school) is almost always empty!
Would there be a case, perhaps, for merging Zone 1 with Zone S1 to afford a more rational use of parking spaces?
I also agree with previous comments that reducing the number of Multiple Occupancy permits would go some way to help with parking and many other problems.

What's the benefit of the yellow lines here? They are rarely available in a place you want to make a quick stop so, by the time you walked to your building and climbed the 3 flights of stairs and back, your 3 minutes of grace have long expired and you'll find a parking fine slapped on your windscreen. It is much safer to pay & display if small increments of payments are introduced. The yellow line spaces should be given to permit holders.

as soon as zone 8 people cannot park in my street (S1) they whine. i would happily pay more to continue to park outside my house. maybe the zone 8 permits are too cheap! supply and demand?

well said Mailin - once again we are not trying to overrun the S1 CPZ but we are trying to encourage some positive action here and come up with solutions...
Interesting that the S1 residents (so far) have posted mainly unhelpful comments and criticisms on the campaign......
